Aspartame Effects----Diet Soda Drinkers, Beware

So this morning, this article jumped out at me....I know a lot of people drink diet drinks, or 'sugar free' which most have this artificial sweetener in it....the article is by Dr. Mercola...I love his website, it's on the link list at the right side of this page, near the bottom...feel free to click it and peek around that site...ok, back to the article...it was stating that there has been new studies on aspartame...not only are there the side effects that it has stated already, but a new study is now linking it to stroke......"This study suggests that diet soda is not an optimal substitute for sugar-sweetened beverages, and may be associated with a greater risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, or vascular death than regular soda." Reports of adverse reactions to the US FDA also supports this, as aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA!

Long-term and Acute Adverse Effects of Aspartame

Acute reactions following aspartame ingestion, as reported to the FDA, include:
  • Headaches/migraines
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pains
  • Fatigue (blocks sufficient glucose entry into brain)
  • Sleep problems
  • Vision problems
  • Anxiety attacks
  • Depression
  • Asthma/chest tightness.
Studies have also linked aspartame consumption to a wide range of health problems, including but not limited to:

  • Emotional disorders
  • Epilepsy/seizures
  • Fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Memory loss, and Alzheimer’s disease
  • Cancer
  • Premature birth, and birth defects

What Makes Aspartame so Dangerous?

Aspartame is made up of:
  • Phenylalanine: 50 percent
  • Methanol (aka wood alcohol/poison): 10 percent that is formed from breaking the ester bond linkage of aspartic acid and pheylalanine.

That's pretty SCARY!! This is just part of the article, it you want to view the entire article, go to:  http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/03/04/new-diet-sodas-can-cause-strokes.aspx
